My home as a child and teenager was in Ditchling, Sussex where sculptor, artist and lettering cutter Eric Gill started a catholic community of artists called The Guild of St Joseph and St Dominic. Gill moved from Ditchling to Wales to Capel-y-ffin where he lived in a monastery near this church, so I was drawn to it to see the gravestones which he had hand carved.I was so inspired by the words quoted here, which are etched into the glass of the window over the altar looking out towards the mountains at Offas Dyke. These words (from Psalm 121) summed up for me the spiritual power of the landscape here, the mountains the beautiful valley at Capel-y-ffin. I hand lettered the words with my brush onto the original painting but the original was too large to scan so I have reproduced the central picture and background separately.
"I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help"
